TLDR: your roof needs to protect you form more than just weather. I don't do heights anymore, so had a pest control company come in and they blocked the entry and put spike strips on both sides of the peak so there is no comfortable roosting area. The soffit wasn't missing, but I guess it was loose enough they could get in. I guess the latest crew of roofers had dislodged the soffit on the other side of the peak from the squirrel entry I had blocked before. I went outside and could hear it from out there, it was so loud. I immediately thought of squirrels, but this was a lot louder than they had ever been. About three weeks ago I woke up to a horrible racket in the soffit and couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. We had to replace our shingles again this spring. My brother was a roofer and replaced all the vents with metal ones so they couldn't get back in.
